WheelsTV Vehicle Spotlight: 2024 Mazda CX-30 – An Engaging Small SUV

In the competitive landscape of small crossover SUVs, the 2024 Mazda CX-30 remains a standout choice, combining sporty handling with refined design elements.

Mazda is no stranger to building affordable, fun-to-drive vehicles, they pretty much rewrote the story of the sporty 2-seater and MAZDASPEED3 is still a favorite with hot-hatch enthusiasts. But, in recent years, Mazda has undergone a notable evolution in its vehicle lineup, transitioning away from the iconic “Zoom-Zoom” ethos towards a focus on premium luxury or, in the case of the Mazda CX-50 SUV, a more adventurous spirit.

That’s not to say that Mazda has moved away from dynamic cars, quite the opposite, they’ve somehow managed to build cars and SUVs that not only feel more expensive than they are, but are more fun than they should be.

The recently discontinued Mazda6 sedan went out on top, even as Mazda phased out the 6, it continued to garner high praise from car reviewers for its exceptional blend of upscale luxury and engaging handling. And while the MAZDA3 continues to represent the hot hatch crowd in Mazda’s lineup, it may feel a bit small for some.

Let’s face it, the SUV craze isn’t going anywhere, and even though cars like the Mazda3 are more fun to drive and can also be ordered with a handy hatchback that offers similar cargo capacity, people want SUVs, especially small SUVs.

Enter the Mazda CX-30, introduced for the 2020 model year to fill the spot between the CX-3 and CX-5, the CX-30 took over the entry-level SUV position when the CX-3 was retired in 2021. It’s hard to believe that the CX-30 is entering its fourth model year, it certainly doesn’t look like it’s due for a refresh anytime soon. Which is a testament to Mazda’s KODO styling. Sure it has evolved a bit since its introduction over a decade ago, but it still looks as fresh and elegant as ever.

Starting at $24,995 the CX-30 is available in a wide range of configurations ranging from the base 2.5 S to the top-tier 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. For 2024 Mazda adds the sporty 2.5 S Carbon Edition and 2.5 Carbon Turbo trims.

As we mentioned, the exterior of the CX-30 reflects Mazda’s renowned KODO design philosophy, characterized by graceful lines and distinctive coupe-inspired styling. The CX-30 also features black wheel arches and boasts 8 inches of ground clearance, embodying its sport-utility nature while exuding an aura of refinement and sophistication.

Inside, the spacious cabin of the CX-30 is optimized for minimal noise, vibration, and harshness, ensuring a serene driving experience for all occupants. With comfortable seating for five and available leather-trimmed sport seats, the CX-30 offers a premium, upmarket feel.

For 2024 the CX-30 now offers a newly available Mazda Connect 10.3-inch display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system can be operated effortlessly using voice commands or the console-mounted Commander Control. Mazda Navigation is available.

Under the hood, buyers can choose between two powertrain options. The base model is powered by a 191-horsepower, 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G inline 4-cylinder engine, while higher trims receive a 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G Dynamic Pressure Turbo inline 4-cylinder engine that delivers up to 250 horsepower when using premium fuel. Both engines come paired with a responsive 6-speed automatic transmission and standard i-ACTIV All-Wheel-Drive with Off-road Traction Assist.

The non-turbo 2.5-liter engine gets 26 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. As expected the more powerful Turbo 2.5 drops to 22 MPG city and 30 MPG highway.

Standard features include Lane-Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with stop and go functionality. An available 360-degree view Monitor provides a comprehensive view of your surroundings.

The Mazda CX-30 is backed by a 3-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty, and a 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

There’s no shortage of small SUVs to choose from and some strong new competitors are entering the market this year, including the redesigned Chevy Trax and Hyundai Kona, and all-new Buick Envista. But despite the incoming competition, engaging driving dynamics, elegant styling, and an upmarket interior still help the CX-30 stand out from the pack.
