2024 Ford F-150 Lightning: Capable All-Electric Pick up | WTV Vehicle Spotlight

F-150 Ford Lightning: Underrated EV Pickup

The Ford F-150 Lightning represented one of the most significant shifts in the history of America’s best-selling pickup. By transforming the familiar F-150 formula into a fully electric truck, Ford Motor Company has managed to keep the utility and capability buyers expect while introducing the benefits of modern EV technology. The result was a pickup that feels both familiar and forward-looking.

As you may have heard, the Ford F-150 Lightning has ceased production—but that doesn’t mean you can’t still buy a new one. As I write this, nearly 100 2025 Lightnings are sitting on dealer lots around the Boston area alone, which highlights the challenge facing the brand’s first all-electric pickup. When the end of production was announced, Ford President Andrew Frick pointed to “market realities and customer preferences.” The amount of unsold 2025 models still in inventory certainly seems to support that explanation.

The sad reality of the Ford F-150 Lightning’s demise is that it’s actually very good—really good, in fact. It’s one of the best-performing pickups we’ve ever driven. But attempting to electrify the full-size truck market was always a gamble. Politics, range anxiety, and the lack of a truly robust charging infrastructure to support widespread EV adoption in the United States likely all played a role in the truck’s poor sales. Not to mention an MSRP that was high above Ford original $40,000 promise.

If you are on the fence about buying a Ford F-150 Lighting EV you may be able to get a deal on the current inventory. But, like any electric vehicle, if you plan on jumping into the EV life you really need to take a honest look at the real costs of charging vs buying gas and the amount of miles that you drive on a daily basis. Here’s a look at the F150 Lighting has to offer.

Familiar Truck Design, Smarter EV Packaging

At first glance, the F-150 Lightning maintains the traditional, utilitarian design language of the standard F-150. The difference lies in how the electric architecture opens up new possibilities. Without a conventional engine under the hood, the Lightning features a large Mega Power Frunk—a front trunk that adds secure, weatherproof storage along with USB ports and 120-volt AC outlets.

For buyers who use their trucks as mobile workstations, the optional 9.6-kilowatt Pro Power Onboard system expands functionality even further. In addition to outlets in the frunk, it adds two more 120-volt outlets and a 240-volt outlet in the bed, allowing the truck to power tools, equipment, or even provide backup power in certain situations.

A Comfortable and Functional Cabin / Modern Technology

Inside, the Lightning is offered exclusively in the spacious SuperCrew configuration, providing comfortable seating for up to five passengers. Practicality remains a major focus of the cabin design.

Most trims include Ford’s clever Interior Work Surface, which uses a stowable gear shifter to create a flat workspace across the center console—perfect for signing paperwork, using a laptop, or grabbing a quick meal between job sites. Available Max Recline Seats can fold nearly flat, giving drivers a comfortable place to rest during long workdays or road trips.

Technology plays a major role in the Lightning experience. Higher trims feature a large 15.5-inch portrait-style touchscreen running Ford’s SYNC 4A infotainment system. The interface supports enhanced voice recognition and integrates navigation directly into the system.

Smartphone connectivity is standard across the lineup with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring drivers can easily access their apps, music, and messages while on the road.

Powerful Electric Performance, Range & Charging

The F-150 Lightning delivers serious performance thanks to its dual-motor, four-wheel-drive system. Models equipped with the standard-range battery produce a targeted 452 horsepower, while trucks with the extended-range battery increase output to 580 horsepower. Both configurations deliver a massive 775 pound-feet of torque, providing strong acceleration and impressive capability.

When properly equipped, Flash and Lariat trims can tow up to 10,000 pounds, keeping the Lightning competitive with many traditional gas-powered pickups.

Electric trucks must balance power with range, and the Lightning offers options to suit different needs. Models with the standard-range battery can travel up to 240 miles on a full charge, while extended-range models can reach as much as 320 miles, depending on trim.

Charging can be surprisingly quick with the right equipment. Using a compatible DC fast charger, the standard-range battery can charge from 15% to 80% in about 32 minutes, while the extended-range battery takes roughly 38 minutes for the same charge window.

Safety Comes Standard

Ford equips the Lightning with a wide range of standard driver-assistance features through the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite. Key technologies include Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross-Traffic Alert, and a Lane-Keeping System, helping drivers stay aware and protected on busy roads.

Ford’s BlueCruise hands free driving assistant is available on the F-150 Lightning. We found it to be useful, but it’s only available on select roads.

Warranty Coverage

Ownership peace of mind comes with solid warranty coverage. The Lightning includes a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, along with an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty covering EV-specific components such as the battery system.

Final Thoughts

By blending the capability and practicality that made the F-150 famous with the advantages of electric power, the Ford F-150 Lightning stands out as a class-defining electric pickup. With strong performance, innovative utility features, and advanced technology, it proves that going electric doesn’t mean giving up what makes a truck truly useful.

And while it may be on the way out, we still recommend that you give the F150 Lighting a look, its a lot of truck, especially if you can get one at ‘clearance sale’ pricing.
