WheelsTV® ROLLS OUT SAFETEEN DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM:

EDUCATES INEXPERIENCED DRIVERS REDUCES RISK OF TEEN ACCIDENTS

Acton, Ma. - July 28, 2003 - Teens are at a greater risk for accidents and fatalities than any other group of drivers. Approximately 15% or 1.6 million accidents per year involve drivers between the ages of 15-19 years old. There are a number of reasons for this sobering statistic, but overwhelmingly, the primary reason is inexperience. The leading cause of accidents in new drivers is that they don't know how to respond to emergency driving situations.

In response to this statistic, WheelsTV®, the first-ever consumer automotive television network, has developed The SafeTeen® Driver Improvement Program. The goal of SafeTeen is to prepare young drivers for driving situations that require quick and effective responses.

SafeTeen will be taught on closed-courses by certified, professional driving instructors. From behind the wheel, teenaged drivers will learn:

  • Why tailgating is a leading cause of accidents
  • How to maintain vehicle control in emergencies
  • How to make emergency lane changes
  • How to properly apply anti-lock brakes
  • Panic stop techniques

SafeTeen will be provided on a community level in cooperation with WheelsTV's distribution partners, local police departments and service organizations such as Rotary and Lions Clubs. Scholarships will be awarded to deserving teenaged drivers.

The SafeTeen Driver Improvement Program has been created in association with Stevens Advanced Driver Training, pioneers in teen driver training and a leading trainer of police departments in the eastern U.S. (http://www.mv.com/ipusers/sadt/index.html).

"We are extremely pleased to be working with WheelsTV in providing the SafeTeen Driver Improvement Program," said Sandy Stevens, founder of Stevens Advanced Driver Training. "Through WheelsTV, the SafeTeen Program will reach thousands of young drivers who otherwise would not be prepared for driving situations that often lead to serious accidents."

As WheelsTV rolls out across America beginning in the fourth quarter of 2003, so will the SafeTeen program, leading to an increase in well-trained young motorists and an overall improvement in road safety. WheelsTV hopes that the new initiative will help reduce the probability of accidents for its participants by at least 50%.

"Incident-response training is a critical component of youth driver education," said Jim Barisano, chairman of WheelsTV. "Teens don't have the experience or knowledge to react effectively to emergency driving situations. Working with our distribution partners, local civic groups and Sandy Stevens' proven driver training program, we intend to reduce teen driving accidents and injuries, and improve the safety of our nation's roads."

WheelsTV is the first-ever 24/7 television channel dedicated to celebrating the beauty, action, fun and excitement of our century-long love affair with the car.
